Despite all the negative news you get to hear about our country, our GDP is growing at 7.10% annually, which is among the highest in the world. If our economy continues to grow at this rate, we will become an affluent country within the next 50 years.
During the King's autocratic rule, our economy never grew by more than 3% annually. We were among the 3 poorest countries in the world. Today were are richer than 20 other countries. Thirty years ago, more than 2/3rd of Nepalis were under the line of poverty. People were so dirt poor that they couldn't afford to eat two meals a day. Today, only 21.6% (or 6 million) of Nepalis are under the line of poverty.
Don't let the bad news you hear on Facebook and social media fool you. After the advent of multiparty democracy - and despite all the corruption - Nepal has become one of the fastest-developing countries in the world. But we were so poor, to begin with, and so much damage was done under the Rana rule and then the King's autocratic rule that it will take decades for us to catch up with countries with our neighbors, India and China.
